For all Americans who believe in citizenship equality for Puerto Rico, this blog can serve as a springboard to citizen action. Unlike our American brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico, those of us living in one of the fifty states have a voice in our government and it is common wisdom that our elected officials listen carefully when the people speak directly on the issues–even if it is to save their jobs and not for the morally correct reasons of democracy.
The issue of Puerto Rico has carried on for 112 years under the United States flag, and roughly 400 years under the Spanish Empire, and this longevity is because We the People have failed to speak out. The following is a collection of specific actions we can all take to help Puerto Rico achieve equality through self-determination.

CONTACT YOUR DEMOCRATICALLY-ELECTED OFFICIALS

With access to your elected officials, you can direct your message of citizenship equality on behalf of Puerto Rico. Below you can access specific information about your elected officials. In addition, we have included some preformatted text that conveys our sentiment on the issue of self-determination for Puerto Rico.
Once you find your federal officials, let them hear from you. If you have trouble coming up with a clear message, La Chuleta Congelá’ has already prepared a short letter on your behalf that can be quickly sent via email, snail mail, fax, or even read on the phone. So, fill out your information and send it! (See “Must-Axxess Files” box at the bottom of this page.)
Keep in mind that although the issue of Puerto Rico falls directly under the authority of the U.S. Congress, all states of the Union have a stake in this process. As such, we encourage you to talk to your local representatives about your belief that we should all share in our duty to promote self-determination and equality for all Americans in Puerto Rico.
There are many things state and local governments can do to help. State legislators and local council members can sponsor resolutions stating their support for self-determination for Puerto Rico and direct them to Congress; they can also use their own standing in the community to convey their personal and community wishes to their own elected representatives at the federal level.
To think that advancing democratic rights and citizenship equality would be this simple!
